HTGR Hydrogen and Heat Application Research Center

Aiming at Practical Applications of Safe and Environment-friendly Nuclear Reactor with various heat utilizations

    Test Reactor (HTTR)

  • Graphite moderated and Helium gas-cooled high temperature reactor with 30MW reactor thermal power.
  • Due to the core constructed of fuel particle coated by four-multiple ultrathin ceramics layers and graphite core component, meltdown-proof design is available.

The accident in the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Company caused people in Japan to waver in their confidence on nuclear reactor. In such a situation, High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) which possesses inherent safety and can be used for a wide range of heat utilizations attracted people’s attention, and in the 'Strategic Energy Plan', it is specified that the Government of Japan facilitates research and development of HTGR under international cooperation.

In HTGR Hydrogen and Heat Application Research Center, fundamental technologies, which are indispensable to the next-generation HTGR, such as codes to analyze nuclear reactor, advanced heat-resistant fuel, long lived graphite and so on have been developed and advanced.

In the R&D on water splitting hydrogen production method (IS process) driven by heat supply from HTGR, we had constructed Hydrogen Production Test Facility made of industrial materials such as alloy, ceramic and so on, and have begun operation test to verify the function of 3 reaction processes which IS process consists of.

The next step, we are planning to integrate High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) with heat application system such as Hydrogen production facility and Helium gas turbine facility. We will advance R&D to contribute practical applications of HTGR.
